When Siva is enjoined with Sakti, he is empowered to create. Without her, he cannot even move or do anything. Hence how can one who has not performed meritorious deeds be capable of saluting or praising you, who is worshipped even by the trinity and others? Creation requires two elements, like the concept of Yin Yang ("dark-bright", "negative-positive"), where two halves together complete wholeness. They seemed to be opposite or contrary forces, but they are complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world. Similar to two sides of the coin, there is no on sided coin (basic law of nature). According to yin yang philosophy, the universe and everything in it are both constant and cyclical. In this infinite cycle, when one force dominates, soon replaced by the opposing force. Yin yang concept is observed in all natural phenomena: Life and death; Night and day; Dark and light; Cold and hot or Cycle of the seasons; Positive and negative and so on.
Siva-Sakti is one, but looks or seems to appear as two deities. Poets enjoy producing literary works on this paradox. This is a benedictory invocation to Siva and Sakti

You mother, gives refuge and grants wishes to all this world not out of fear. Other deities give protection from fear and boon from empty hands (do not own much or have much power). Oh refuge of the worlds! Even your feet are expert in protecting all of us from fear and giving reward in excess of what is asked, desired or deserved. (Assemblage of gods make empty promises or bestow trivial boons).

The Soundarya Lahari (சௌந்தர்ய லஹரி सौन्दर्यलहरी) meaning "Waves Of Beauty" is an unique lyrical composition or literary work in Sanskrit believed to be written by sage Pushpadanta and Adi Shankara, though some dispute this. The first part is Anandalahari (wave of bliss) consisting of forty one verses and the second called Saundaryalahari, composed of fifty nine verses, describing the physical beauty of the Devi or Goddess. The Soundarya Lahari is also viewed as a tantra textbook.
The Saundaryalahari is one of the popular devotional poem, serving as a foundation text for saktisim (sakti worship). Saktisim is one of the shanmathas or six religious traditions (the worship of Siva, Sakti, Vishnu, Surya, Ganapathi and Kumara) of Bharatavarsha. The system is inclusive, assimilating local deities, beliefs, traditions etc, under shanmatha.
The story is that the work was partially destroyed (may be by a natural disaster or by purpose by some one/group). Later the author would have completed the work. Anandalahari dealing with saktism incorporates some tantric concepts like kundalini. The second part deals with the divine beauty of the Universal Mother from the top of her gem studded crown to her sacred feet. The many metaphors contained in them are repeated.
Lalita the popular goddess, accepted by all six religious traditions. Popular slokas are lalitaasahasranamaa, trishati, ashhTottaranaama and Khadgamala Stotram with Shri Chakra. Sri Chakra is the mystical geometric representation of the Divine Mother. Khadgamala Stotram is another hymn to the Divine Mother. Khadga means Sword, Mala means Garland. While reciting each name, yoginis of Sri Chakra should spring up in our imagination.
SHAKTI denotes force, power, or energy. There is no positive or negative energy. All are same Energy, but different types or forms, like heat and light, physical and mental energy. Goddess SHAKTI refers to infinite universal energy. Same energy exists in different forms and exists as objects (energy mass conversion). Exists with in each object, outside the object, and also acts on and controls the object
Well read/informed author personifies the universal energy as the Universal Mother. She creates, existing as essence in her creation. She also exists indepentent of her creation ruling/protecting/destroying to recreate them.
Universal Mother creates the trinity of Gods and also exist as consort to them. The Creator (Brahma or Svayambhu) wears his concert, the Goddess of Learning (Sarasvati) on his tongue. The Protector (Vishnu or Hari) wears his concert the Goddess of Wealth (Lakshmi) on his chest. The Destroyer (Shiva or Sambhu) bears the Goddess of Power (Parvati) on the left half of his body. All the three Gods thus function as the servants of Universal Mother (through their spouses?). [Shringara Shataka by Bhartrihari]

The author visualises Universal Mother, as the most beautiful, compassionate and caring lady, one can find. He/She talks with her, praising her with his songs. Philosophical essence of scriptures (vedas) in also brought out in these poems. Some of the popular stories on Gods are also referred.

There are many similar texts, except some many have been destroyed completely or partially. Using Soundarya Lahari as an example there are many regional/language versions.

Abhirami Anthaathi by Abhirami Pattar from Tamil Nadu is also 100 verse poem, similar to Soundarya Lahari.
These poems are high quality/beautiful literary out put from the author for us to recite/understand/enjoy. Like any literary works, there will be exaggeration, human feelings etc.

(1) Tripura meaning three cities, was constructed by the great Asura architect Mayasura. They were great cities of prosperity, power and dominance over the world. The three cities were made of iron, silver and gold and were located on earth, in the sky and in heaven, respectively. Asuras got aboon that the destruction of the cities could be brought about by a single arrow only, on the hope that it was impossible for anyone to shoot such an arrow. After several years of joy, Asuras began to oppress the good and torment the noble and shattered the peace of the worlds. So, all requested Lord Shive to help.
The Earth or Prithvi became the chariot with the Sun and Moon its wheels. Brahma was holding the reins. Mount Meru became the bow and the serpent Sheshnaag was the bow string. Vishnu was the arrow, and Agni was the tip of the arrow. Vayu was inside the feathers on rear of the arrow. Shiva got the title, Tripurantaka after destruction of Tripura. There is also another version that Shiva laughed and burned the three purams ("சிரித்துப்புரமெரித்த பெருமான்").

(2) Kama (desire/longing) or Manmatha is the god love or desire. Kamadeva's consort is Rati, whose very essence is desire. Indra (also devas) assigns Kamadeva to break Shiva's meditation, so that Shiva and Parvathi can give birth to Karthikeya, to save devas. After Kamadeva awakens Shiva with a flower arrow, furious Shiva opens his third eye, which incinerates Kamadeva instantaneously. To help his consort Rati, Shiva makes Kamadeva live in a disembodied form; hence Kamadeva is also called Ananga or Atanu (without body).
Kamadeva holds Sugarcane Bow and Floral Arrow riding on a Parrot. The word smara rather refers to Krishna and Kamadeva.

You grant all the necessary/good things, to those who worship or bow at your feet. You are worshipped by the Lord Vishnu, Who took the pretty attractive lady form, and could make Shiva (yogi known for penance and who burnt three cities/worlds), fall in love to his feminine form. Having bowed to you, the God of love, Manmatha or Smara too with a body which is like nectar, drunk by the eyes of Rati, is indeed capable of creating metal agitation (generating delusion) to great sages, who are well known for mind control. The Lord of all souls, Pasupathi created 64 thanthras or spiritual disciplines, for attaining only one power restricted to each discipline. Then he started relaxing. You motivated him to create this mortal world. But Sri vidya, your spiritual discipline grants the devotee, which brings together all 64 disciplines as one, to attain all the principal objects of human life. Oh Mother with your grace, most precious Sri vidya, has descended to the surface of the earth.
Though forms of Shiva are numerous, in Saiva Siddhanta tradition, 25 or 64 or 108 anthropomorphic (iconic) forms are highlighted. In ancient times, different groups came up with their own list of forms competiting with one another. The Shaivas have 25 forms of Shiva, the Vaishnavas have 25 avatars of Vishnu, the Buddhists have 25 Buddhas, and the Jains have 24 Tirthankaras. The number 25 is significant because 25 is the number of tattvas (principles of reality) in the Sankhya philosophy. The number of Sanskrit consonents in the 5 x 5 scheme (5 sets of pentad consonents - 5 glutterals, 5 palatals, 5 cerebrals, 5 dentals, 5 labials).
Later 64 became the significant in Shaivite and Shakta Agamic traditions. There are 64 Yoginis, 64 Siddhas, 64 Bhairavas, 64 Bhairava Agamas, 64 Kaula Tantras, 64 Tantric kriyas (rites), 64 Kalas, 64 Tamil Shaivite Saints (63 Nayannars + Manikkavasagar). 64 is a holy number because it is 8 x 8. Eight, is significant because it is the number of existent entities in creation, and also the state of Shiva beyond the seven higher worlds of creation (bhu, bhuva, svaha, maha, jana, tapa, satya) and beyond the seven chakras (muladhara, svadhisthana, manipura, anahata, vishuddha, ajna, and saharsra).
Finally, 64, became 108. There are 108 Upanishads of the Muktika canon, 108 (main) Pancharatra Agamas of the Vaishnavas, 108 Divyadeshas (holy pilgrimage spots) of the Sri-Vaishnavas, 108 beads on japa malas (chanting rosaries), 108 divisions of the eclipctic in Vedic astrology, 108 names in the ashtottarashata namavalis (list of Divine names), etc.

Soundarya Lahari (The waves of beauty)

People were worshipping female deities in fearful form, by offering animal and human sacrifices. There was a need to correct these and go for compassionate and peaceful rituals. The author develops the concept of Universal Mother, as every ones' own divine mother, the most beautiful, compassionate and caring lady, one can find. This helped in converting fearful figures to pretty forms like Kamakshi and Annapoorni. In Tiruvanai kovil, there is a story that Adi shankara converted fearful deity in to compassionate and beautiful Akilandeswari by offering thadangam (Srichakra) and installing Bala ganapathi idol/form before Akilandeswari.
During the period of poets like Bhartrihari, Dandin, and Bilhana (Guptas or Golden age of Hindu revival), large number of poems, dealing with a different rasa or aesthetic mood were written. Sringara rasa poems dwell on the ways and means of women who rule or impress by their bewitching beauty. Bulk of them were lost and many are still available partially. This second part looks similar to many poems written during that period.

Oh Mother! When shall I, who begs for knowledge, drink the water bearing the lac dye or the nectar like water, used for ablution of your feet? That knowledge will remove spritual ignorance, to relish the joy called supreme bliss. The goodness of saliva mixed with Thambola (betel and areca nut juice) from lotus faced of Vani, made one born as mute to become the king of poets?
