'இயற்கையே இறைவன்' என்பதை வான்சிறப்பு அதிகாரம் உணர்த்துகிறது. வான் விண்ணைக் குறிக்கும். விண்ணில் நிலவும் மேகத்தின் வழி பெய்யும் மழையின் பெருமையையும் குறிக்கும். வானில் உள்ள கதிரவன், பூமி, மற்ற வைகளையும் குறிக்கலாம் இல்லையா? அனைத்து உயிர்களுக்கும் ஆதாரம் நீர்
Nature is God. Tamil word Van represents the sky. So sky includes, sun, clouds, rain and celestial objects. So these ten poems may also refer to many celestial objects? Water is the source of all life. Rain is one component of large natural cycle, which includes sun, moon affective tides, movements of other astronomical bodies, land, ocean/sea, wind etc

அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி
பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு Kural-1
பல மொழிகளைக் கொண்ட எழுத்துக்கள் எல்லாம் அகரத்தை முதலாக உடையன. அதுபோல் பல்வேறு உயிர்களைக்கொண்ட இவ்வுலகம் இறைவனை முதலாக உடையது. (பகவன் - பகலவன் is it sun making day?)
As the letter A is the first of all letters, so the eternal God is first in the world.

கற்றதனால் ஆய பயனென்கொல் வாலறிவன்
நற்றாள் தொழாஅர் எனின். Kural-2
தூய அறிவு வடிவாக விளங்கும் இறைவனுடைய நல்ல திருவடிகளை தொழாமல் இருப்பாரானால், அவர் கற்ற கல்வியினால் ஆகிய பயன் என்ன?. பயனில்லை.
What is the use of the education one has learned if one does not pray to the Lord (God), who is the form of pure knowledge? No use from education or learning.

மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார்
நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார். Kural-3
மலர் போன்ற அன்பரின் மனத்தில் இருப்பவனாகிய கடவுளின் சிறந்த திருவடிகளை எப்போதும் நினைப்பவரின் புகழ், உலகில் நெடுங்காலம் நிலைத்து நிற்கும். இன்ப உலகில் நிலைத்து வாழ்வார்.
They who are united to the glorious feet of God who resides in the flower of the mind, shall flourish long in all worlds. Their fame will live for long time.

வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு
யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல. Kural-4
விருப்பும் வெறுப்பும் இல்லாதவனாகிய இறைவனின் (நடுநிலை, பாரபட்சமற்ற நீதி) திருவடிகளைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களுக்கு, எவ்விடத்திலும், எக்காலத்திலும் துன்பம் இல்லை.
To those who meditate the feet of God who is void of desire or aversion, evil shall never come.

இருள்சேர் இருவினையும் சேரா இறைவன்
பொருள்சேர் புகழ்புரிந்தார் மாட்டு. Kural-5
கடவுளைப் புரிந்து கொண்டவர்களை, அறியாமையால் விளையும் இருவகை வினையும் (நல்வினை, தீவினை) சேர்வதில்லை. புகழுடன் எல்லாரிடமும் அன்பு செலுத்தி வாழ்வார்கள்
People are living in the world of good and evil. Enlightened ones live beyond this, free from right and wrong. They Live in fame, loving every one (everything). Compassionate ones love everyone, both right and wrong. (Like a doctor tries to treat both good and bad people)

பொறிவாயில் ஐந்தவித்தான் பொய்தீர் ஒழுக்க
நெறிநின்றார் நீடுவாழ் வார். Kural-6
மெய், வாய், கண், மூக்கு, செவி ஆகிய ஐந்து பொறிகளின் வாயிலாக பிறக்கும் ஆசைகளை அழித்து, உண்மையான ஒழுக்க வழியிலே நிலை பெற்ற நல்வாழ்க்கை வாழ்வர்.
Those shall long proposer who abide in the faultless way of God who destroys or has destroyed the craving (five desires) of the senses

தனக்குவமை இல்லாதான் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
மனக்கவலை மாற்றல் அரிது. Kural-7
தனக்கு இணையில்லாத கடவுளின் திருவடிகளை நினைக்கின்றவர் அல்லாமல், மற்றவர்க்கு மனக்கவலையை மாற்ற முடியாது.
Anxiety of mind or worries cannot be removed, except from those who are united to incomparable God's feet (who surrender to God).

அறவாழி அந்தணன் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது. Kural-8
அறத்தின் பொருளாக விளங்கும் கடவுளை அறிந்த (அந்தணர்) சான்றோர் சொற்படி, கடவுளின் திருவடிகளை சேர்ந்தவரே அல்லாமல், மற்றவர் இன்பதுன்பக் கடல்களை நீந்திக் கடப்பது கடினம்.
None can swim the sea of vice, but those who are united to the feet of that gracious being (God?) who is a sea of virtue. Following path of great people (God?) is the easy way, to lead a comfortable happy life.

கோளில் பொறியின் குணமிலவே எண்குணத்தான்
தாளை வணங்காத் தலை. Kural-9
எண்ணும் நல்ல குணங்களுக்கு (ஆகமத்தில் கூறப்பட்ட எண்வகைப்பட்ட குணங்கள்: தன்வயப்படுத்தல் ; தூய்மை; இயற்கை; பாசங்களுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டவர்; முடிவில்லா ஆற்றல்; வரம்பு இல்லா இன்பம்) எல்லாம் இருப்பிடமான கடவுளின் திருவடிகளை வணங்காத தலைகள், உடல், கண், காது, மூக்கு, வாய் எனும் ஐம்பொறிகள் இல்லாத பொறிகள்போல, இருந்தும் பயன் இல்லாதவையே.
Those who do not worship the feet of God, who possesses eight ideal attributes mentioned in scriptures (attractive; Pure; personification of nature; know all; free with out bondage/universal; compassionate; unlimited ability/strength; and unlimited bliss/happinessas), is as useless as a sense without the power of sensation

பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார்
இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார். Kural-10
கடவுளின் திருவடிகளைச் சேர்ந்தவர் பிறவியாகிய பெருங்கடலை நீந்திக் கடப்பர்; மற்றவர் நீந்தவும் மாட்டார்
Those who surrender at the feet of God, will cross the great ocean of life; others will not. Life is a tough journey and belief in God, helps us to face challenges along the way. It is a medicine for life stress.

வான்நின்று உலகம் வழங்கி வருதலால்
தான்அமிழ்தம் என்றுணரற் பாற்று. Kural-11
உரிய காலத்தில் மழை பெய்வதால்தான் உலகம் நிலைபெற்று வருகிறது. அதனால் மழை உயிர்களுக்கு அமிழ்தம். மழைக்கு காரணமான கடலும் அமிழ்தம்.
By the continuance of rain the world is preserved in existence; it is therefore worthy to be called ambrosia

துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய துப்பாக்கித் துப்பார்க்குத்
துப்பாய தூஉம் மழை. Kural-12
உண்பவர்க்குத் தக்க உணவுப் பொருள்களை விளைவித்துத் தருவதோடு, பருகுவார்க்குத் தானும் ஓர் உணவாக இருப்பது மழையாகும்.
The rain makes the food we eat also it (rain water itself) is a food and drink

விண்இன்று பொய்ப்பின் விரிநீர் வியன்உலகத்து
உள்நின்று உடற்றும் பசி. Kural-13
வானம் மழை பொழியாவிட்டால், பசி நீக்கும் உணவு கிடைக்காது. நீரால் நிறைந்த அகன்ற உலகமாக இருந்தும் உரிய காலத்தே மழை பெய்யாது பொய்க்குமானால், உயிர்களைப் பசி வருத்தும்.
Though covered by water (sea/ocean) on all sides, If there is no enough rain, People living on earth will suffer from hunger (famine/draught)

ஏரின் உழாஅர் உழவர் புயல்என்னும்
வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால். Kural-14
மழைப் பொழிவு குறைந்தால் (புயல் என்று அழிக்கும் வெள்ளபெருக்கும் தனது தன்மையை இழந்தால்) உணவுப் பொருள்களை உண்டாக்கும் உழவர்கள் ஏர் கொண்டு உழமாட்டார். உழவுத் தொழில் குன்றி விடும். மழையைக் குறிக்கும்?
If rainfall decreases (also destructive storm-flood responsible for water availability), food-producing farmers will not plow the land. Farming will decline.

கெடுப்பதூஉம் கெட்டார்க்குச் சார்வாய் மற்றாங்கே
எடுப்பதூஉம் எல்லாம் மழை. Kural-15
அழிப்பதுவும் வளம் செய்வதுவும் மழை. பெய்யாமல் வாழ்வைக் கெடுக்க வல்லதும் மழை; மழையில்லாமல் வளம் கெட்டு நொந்தவர்க்கும் துணையாய் அவ்வாறே காக்க வல்லதும் மழையாகும்.
Rain does everything, both destroying and enriching land and life on earth. Absense of rain creates draughts and excessive rain can creates floods. But rain water is essential to sustain life.

விசும்பின் துளிவீழின் அல்லால்மற்று ஆங்கே
பசும்புல் தலைகாண்பு அரிது. Kural-16
வானத்திலிருந்து (மழைத்துளி) மழை பெய்யா வி ட்டால், புல்லும் முளைக்காது. பசும்புல்லின் நுனியைக்கூட காண்பது அரிதாகிவிடும்.
If no drop falls from the clouds, not even the green blade of grass will be seen. So forget about growing food.

நெடுங்கடலும் தன்நீர்மை குன்றும் தடிந்துஎழிலி
தான்நல்காது ஆகி விடின். Kural-17
மேகம் கடலிலிருந்து நீரைக் கொண்டு அதனிடத்திலேயே பெய்யாமல் விடுமானால், பெரிய கடல் கூட வற்றிப் போகும்.
Even the wealth of the large sea will be diminished, if the cloud that has drawn (its waters) up, does not give water back again as rain.

சிறப்பொடு பூசனை செல்லாது வானம்
வறக்குமேல் வானோர்க்கும் ஈண்டு. Kural-18
மழையில்லை என்றால் தெய்வங்களும் நினைக்கப்படுவது இல்லை. மழை பெய்யாமல் போகுமானால் இவ்வுலகத்தில் வானோர்க்காக நடைபெறும் திருவிழாவும் நடைபெறாது; நாள் வழிபாடும் நடைபெறாது.
If the heaven dry up, neither yearly festivals, nor daily worship will be offered in this world, to the celestials

தானம் தவம்இரண்டும் தங்கா வியன்உலகம்
வானம் வழங்காது எனின். Kural-19
அறங்கள் தழைக்கவும் மண்ணுலகில் மழைபெய்தல் இன்றியமையாதது. மழை பெய்யவில்லையானால், இந்த விரிந்த இவ்வுலகத்தில் பிறர்க்குத் தரும் தானம் இராது. தன்னை உயர்த்தும் தவமும் இராது.
Rainfall in this spacious world, is essential for the cultivation of virtues. If it does not rain, there is money, for charity to give to others. People will not be interested in penance and alms-deeds.

நீர்இன்று அமையாது உலகெனின் யார்யார்க்கும்
வான்இன்று அமையாது ஒழுக்கு Kural-20
எப்படிப்பட்டவர்க்கும் நீர் இல்லாமல் உலக வாழ்க்கை நடைபெறாது என்றால், மழை இல்லையானால் ஒழுக்கமும் நிலைபெறாமல் போகும்
There can be no life or nothing one can do, without water. So without rain there cannot be any flowing water. With out rain, there will be chaos every where.

Avvaiyar's poems on GOD [To TOP]

ஆத்தி சூடி அமர்ந்த தேவனை | ஏத்தி ஏத்தித் தொழுவோம் யாமே.
திருவாத்தி பூமாலையை அணிபவராகிய சிவபெருமான் விரும்பிய தேவனை (விநாயகக் கடவுளை) வாழ்த்தி வாழ்த்தி தொழுவோம்

கொன்றை வேந்தன் செல்வன் அடியினை | என்றும் ஏத்தித் தொழுவோம் யாமே
Let us pray daily, at the feet of the Son of Lord Siva

பாலும் தெளிதேனும் பாகும் பருப்புமிவை
நாலும் கலந்துனக்கு நான் தருவேன் - கோலம்செய்
துங்கக் காரிமுகத்து தூமணியே நீ எனக்கு
சங்கத் தமிழ் மூன்றும் தா -Nalvazhi
Milk, clear honey, caramel and lentil I offer you the four mixed - beautiful Teacher with the precious gem (Elephant) face, Teach me Sangam Tamil in its triple form.

வாக்குண்டாம் நல்ல மனமுண்டாம் மாமலராள்
நோக்குண்டாம் மேனி நுடங்காது -பூக்கொண்டு
துப்பார் திருமேனி தும்பிக்கை யான்பாதம்
தப்பாமல் சார்வார் தமக்கு -Moodhurai
பூக்களைக் கொண்டு சிவந்த மேனியுடைய விநாயகரது பாதங்களைத் துதிப்பவர்க்கு வாக்குத் திறமையும், நல்ல மனமும், பெருமலரை உடைய லக்ஷ்மியின் கடாக்ஷமும், நோயற்ற வாழ்வும் கிடைக்கும்
Those who worship with flowers at the feet of the one with a beautiful body and a trunk will have the gift of the tongue, an alert mind, the grace of the Goddess of wealth and a healthy life.

Aathisoodi-30.அறனை மறவேல்.
கடவுளை மனதில் எப்பொழுதும் நினைக்கவேண்டும்
Do not forget God or almighty

Aathisoodi-57. திருமாலுக்கு அடிமை செய்
திருமாலுக்கு/நாராயணர்க்கு தொண்டு செய்
Serve Tirumal or Vishnu or God or Almighty

Aathisoodi-61. தெய்வ மிகழேல்
கடவுளை பழிக்காதே.
Do not disregard the supreme divine, God etc (include nature worship)

Aathisoodi-102. வீடு பெறநில்
முக்தியை பெறுவதற்கான சன்மார்கத்திலே வாழ்க்கையை நடத்து
Progress for salvation, by leading a peaceful spiritual life

KondraiVendhan-2. ஆலயம் தொழுவது சாலவும் நன்று
கோவிலுக்குச் சென்று இறைவனைத் தொழுவது மிகவும் நல்லது
It is good to visit the temple for worship. Praying at temple is a good habit

KondraiVendhan-43. தெய்வம் சீறின் கைத்தவம் மாளும்
தெய்வம் கோபித்துக் கொண்டால், எல்லாம் அழிந்து போகும். கடவுளின் கோபம் ஒருவரின் செல்வம் மற்றும் அனைத்தையும் பறித்துவிடும்.
God’s wrath will take away one’s fortunes, wealth and all. Loose everything, acquired or saved.

KondraiVendhan-51. நீரகம் பொருந்திய ஊரகத்து இரு
நீர் நிறைந்த ஊரில் வசிக்க வேண்டும்
Live in places with good water resources or water is available.

KondraiVendhan-71. மாரி அல்லது காரியம் இல்லை
மழையின்றி ஒன்றும் இல்லை
With out rain nothing will happen on this earth (no life, food etc).

KondraiVendhan-72. மின்னுக்கு எல்லாம் பின்னுக்கு மழை
மழை வரப்போவதற்கு அறிகுறியே மின்னல்
The more there is lightening, the more will it rain. Lightening is followed by thunder and rain. May refer to signs before, a major event will occur.

KondraiVendhan-82. வானம் சுருங்கின் தானம் சுருங்கும்
மழை குறைந்து விடுமானால் பல தான தர்மங்கள் குறைந்து விடும்
If rain fails, there will be less food production and charity will reduce.

KondraiVendhan-89. வைகல் தோறும் தெய்வம் தொழு
தினமும் காலையில் தெய்வத்தை வணங்கு
Prey to God every morning. Make that a habit.

சிவாய நம என்று சிந்தித் திருப்போர்க்கு
அபாயம் ஒருநாளும் இல்லை - உபாயம்
இதுவே; மதியாகும் அல்லாத எல்லாம்
விதியே மதியாய் விடும் -Nalvazhi-15
சிவாய நம என்று கூறும் ஐந்தெழுத்து மந்திரமே விதியை வெல்லும் உபாயமாகும். அவர்களுக்கு அபாயம் ஒரு நாளும் இல்லை. இதைத் தவிர நாம் மதி / அறிவு என்று நினைக்கும் அனைத்து விஷயங்களும் விதியின் வழியில் தான் செல்லும்
There is no danger in life for those who pray With the word ‘Sivayanama’ in their heart This is the only wise course of action Everything else will leave one to his fate.

நன்றென்றும் தீதென்றும் நானென்றும் தானென்றும்
அன்றென்றும் ஆமென்றும் ஆகாதே - நின்றநிலை
தானதாம் தத்துவமாம் சம்பறுத்தார் யாக்கைக்குப்
போனவா தேடும் பொருள். -Nalvazhi-38
நல்லது இது என்றும், கெட்டது எது என்றும், இதை செய்தவன் நான் என்றும், அவன் என்றும், இது நடந்து இன்று என்றும் அன்று என்றும் வாழ்க்கையில் நடைபெறும் விஷயங்களை பேதம் பிரித்து பார்க்காமல் இருக்கும் பற்று அற்ற நிலையே உண்மை நிலையாகும். கோரைப்புல்லை வெட்டி அதை கட்டுவதற்கு கோரைப்புல்லை கயிறாக பயன்படுத்துவதை விட்டு விட்டு, வேறு கயிறு தேடும் மனிதரைப் போல், இறைவன் நம் உள்ளே இருக்கிறான், அவனே அனைத்திற்கும் காரணம் என்பதை உணராமல் இருப்பது சரியாகாது.
God residing inside all beings make everthing to move. To search for the good, the bad, the self, the other, The negative or the positive is all foolishness. If one does not realize that within them lies the answer. Then searching outside oneself is a waste of time.

தேவர் குறளும் திருநான் மறைமுடிவும்
மூவர் தமிழும் முனிமொழியும் - கோவை
திருவா சகமும் திருமூலர் சொல்லும்
ஒருவா சகமென் றுணர். -Nalvazhi-40
தெய்வப் புலவர் திருவள்ளுவர் எழுதிய திருக்குறளும், நான்கு வேதத்தின் முடிவும், அப்பர், சம்பந்தர், திருநாவுக்கரசர் ஆகிய மூவர் பாடிய தேவாரமும், மாணிக்க வாசகர் பாடிய திருவாசகமும், திருக்கோவையும், திருமூலர் பாடிய திருமந்திரம் ஆகிய நூல்கள் சொல்லும் பொருள்கள் அனைத்தும் ஒன்று தான் என்று நீ உணர்ந்து கொள்.
The Sacred kural of Thiruvalluvar, the four Vedhas, the sacred hymns of three nayanmars, the works of Manicavasagar, the words of Thirumoolar all speak of one thing, the philosophy of the same faith.

Auvaiyar's kural wisdom - Tirumantiram

1 பத்துத் திசையும் பரந்த கடலுலகும்
ஒத்தெங்கும் நிற்குஞ் சிவம்.
Shiva ever present or merged in all 10 directions, all land and seas/oceans. The ten directions are the eight land directions (north, south, east, west, northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest) and the directions of up and down (zenith and nadir).

2. விண்ணிறைந்து நின்று விளங்குஞ் சுடரொளிபோல்
உண்ணிறைந்து நிற்குஞ் சிவம்.
Like the bright sun in the sky, Light of Shiva is present inside everything (inside us as life force)

3. நிற்கும் பொருளும் நடப்பனவுந் தானாகி
உற்றெங்கும் நிற்குஞ் சிவம்.
Siva as jeevan ever exists/present in all forms in all the universes, both resting/stationary and moving.

திருமந்திரம்: தானே திசையொடு தேவருமாய் நிற்குந்
தானே யுடலுயிர் தத்துவமாய் நிற்குந்
தானே கடல்மலை யாதியுமாய் நிற்குந்
தானே யுலகிற் றலைவனு மாமே.
Tirumantiram: Lord Shiva will ever exist as the god of devotion in ten directions by merging or becoming, the body and life force, all philosophies, the sea and the mountain, and all possible things. Shiva is the first and stands out as THE LEADER, by nature.
