(5) Salutations (tarpan)
[Gotra Name][Name] [Relationship] Svata namas-tarppayami
தர்ப்பயாமி (tarppayāmi) means I satisfy (நான் திருப்திப் படுத்துகிறேன்). Offering water, Sesame and Akshada (as a symbolic gesture).
Similarly, the literal translation of namaha is "not mine," which is affixed to mantras as a means of expressing total dedication of oneself towards the Divine or to whomever the salutation is offered.

Now we have lot of new materials and alloys. So, it is better to make compromises when you have no suitable pot.
  3. Darbhas or kushas, a sacred grass. If you do not have darbha, use a locally available grass. If that cannot be done, just ignore darbhas and proceed without them.
  4. A ring made of darbha, known as pavitram, is to be worn on the right hand ring finger during the ritual. If that is not available, it is acceptable to wear any ring. If that is not possible, proceed without it.
  5. Water.
  6. Black sesame seeds (ellu in Tamil, til in Hindi). If you are male, use black sesame seeds. If you are female, use white sesame seeds. Sesame seeds are the favorites of deceased ancestors' souls. People take Sesame seed based food for quick energy and so may be considered as good for souls who eat once a year.
  7. Some akshatas made by mixing uncooked plain white (or brown) rice grains with turmeric powder and a drop of ghee (clarified butter) or an oil. In the absence of turmeric powder, just plain rice grains can be used as akshatas. In the absence of above, use a grain that is locally popular and available.

Sesame and Akshada

Sesame seeds and rice grains can be put in the well, river or offered to birds.
Sesame seeds are a preferred food source for many seed-eating birds, including buntings, chickadees, crossbills, finches, nutcrackers, nuthatches, redpolls, and sparrows, and many more.
Uncooked raw rice (Akshada) is also good food for birds. Finches and sparrows with beaks adapted to crush grains would rather have raw grain rice.

Evolution of Pithru Hierarchy

The deceased person for whom the ritual is being performed, is considered as a follower of Vasu, his parents are considered as followers of Rudra and his grand parents are considered as followers of Aditya. Three generations are considered as representatives of Vasu-Rudra-Aditya respectively. Vasu means aspirations, Rudra means dissolution and Aditya means radiance or action.

Initially, srardha/tarpanams would have started with father's side. Patriarchal societies or patrilineal, where property and inheritance are inherited by the male lineage. With interactions with matriarchal societies, in which females, especially mothers, have important roles, mathru side would have been added. Importance is given for amman or uncle. Kapila has popularized mathru Gaya, Siddpur in Gujarat, where river saraswathi is to flow. Still, some of the ancestors are left out.

Balanced Pithru-Mathru tree for 3 generations:

Joint families sharing resources, were the norm before 100 years. Property including land are shared among relatives (thayathis) based on male lineage. Females leave the family after marriage. So, all rituals are male centric. Even thittu is based on male side relatives. Thittu for demise of sixth generation male side relative is more than for sister's husband. Since sisters do not live under same roof, death in sister's family does not matter much, for day today activities.
Some scholars are of opinion, that both male and female relatives of the dead can perform the rituals.

Some thoughts about Shraddha Tarpan

தேவதாப்ய: பித்ருப்யச்ச மஹா யோகிப்ய ஏவ ச | நம: | ஸ்வதாயை ஸ்வாஹாயை நித்யமேவ நமோ நம: ||
Respects/salutation to Pitraas and Devataas; to my homage to Swadhaa Devi and Swaahaadevi; May they be always with me;

This rules/rituals are made for our convenience. Divinity is invoked to make people follow and difficult to change established procedures. But with time all will change or will be forced to change
(1) Heaven, Hell and Pithru loga are abstract concepts like Happiness, sadness, fear and suffering. They are not physical worlds or entities.
(2) Pithrus or spirits or atma believed to go through different stages or undergo different experiences. Atma is beyond physical world. No one knows what exactly happens after death. There are many conflicting theories and belief systems based on individual cultural practices. Let us keep them aside. Let us pay our respects to ancestors, to whom we owe our existance!
(3) Pithru rituals are not for pithrus, but for our satisfaction or mental peace. We have to thanks them or pay respects to them as we owe our ancestors. So, it is called "Pithru kadan" (The Debt to Departed Ancestors). This is like prayer to sun or earth, as Sun does not give light just because we say prayer. By this rituals, people are enouraged to do charities and help the needy.

Shraddh or tarpan should be performed with a pious mind. The word sraddha itself means performing something with full involvement. The person who performs these should realize that for his/her birth, body, knowledge, wealth and sanskar he/she is indebted to the ancestors.

There are more than 100 variations of tarpana/sraddha done in different parts of India. Food preparations vary widely from place to place. Mantras mentioned here are might have been the version developed around 400 years ago in Tamilnadu, based on scriptures like pithru suktha, local customs/habits/traditions and stories. During the last 50 years, the rituals itself is getting modified a lot, due the current conditions of our living. But the essence of the ritual is the same

Due to circumstances the Sraadha is being replaced by many with Annadanam, many supplement a short sraadha procedure with Annadanam. Equally important is feeding fellow living beings (humans preferably the poor and animals/birds) on the day. Some people distribute food and clothes among the poor and do some charity.

Any one, Women can do pitru rituals. If there are no sons in a family, daughters can certainly do tharpanam. All can do (karunya) tharpanam for those departed souls who cared for them. The daughter, wife, mother and daughter-in-law of the deceased person have the authority to perform Shraddha (Garuda Purana Preta Khanda 8.3)

Some Information on types and procedures

Pithru tharpanam rites on Amavasya (new moon day), Maalaya Paksham, first day of some months and during eclipse. Tarpana means "satisfying" or "satiating". Tarpana can be performed on any day. Brahma yagnam(sacrifice to Brahma) is the oblation offered to satisfy Devas, Rishis(sages) and Pithrus(ancestors). It was performed daily some yeares back. One acknowledges the debt one has to devas (gods), rishis (sages) and pitris (ancestral manes) and tries to satisfy them using this ritual.
Tharpanam is done only for departed beings (for 12 departed ancestors). Some do tharpanam at sunrise and some at noon.

Traditionally every year Shraddha should be performed on the date of death of the person, as per the astronomical calendar, followed. If the date is not known and only the month is known, then in that case the shraddha can be performed on the no moon night of that month. If both, the date as well as the month is unknown then the shraddha can be performed on the no moon night of the month of Magh or Margashirsha.

During Sraadha we identify the pithru with Gods. Some versions suggest they come as deities themselves. Pururav-Aardrav and Dhurilochan are deities of ancestors' souls. They are referenced in the ritual of Shraddha. Shraddha is associated with the benevolent deities Vasu, Rudra and Aditya of the ancestors' souls.

Types of Shraddha are:
1. Paarvanam (Homam & Feeding Priest/Shastri)
2. Hasta Shraddha (offering food to the priests)
3. Hiranya Shraddha (offering food items/money to the priests).
4. Nandi Shraddha before any function like Upanayanam
5. Tirtha Shraddha performed at Holy places (Pitru Moksha temples and sacred spots ) like Prayag Gaya and kasi, Rameswaram

Gaya Sraadha

The ancient town of Gaya, on the banks of the Phalgu, is named after the demon Gaya sura. There is alsa a Vishnupada temple, over a footprint of Vishnu on solid rock. People travel, for the performance of sraddha at Gaya. It is believed that one's forefathers will be liberated from their spirit-bodies.
There is also Mathru Gaya - Bindu Sarovar (Siddhpur, Gujarat), where people come to offer prayers to their departed mother.
If one can not go to Gaya, there are many similar places like Rameswaram; Brahma Kapal (near Badrinath Dham, on the banks of the Alaknanda River); Trimbakeshwar near Nasik; and Sri-Vanchiyam, Theerthandadhanam & Thiladhaipathi (Thila-tharpana-puri) near Tanjore.
